Food security and access to water

Our food security projects aim to strengthen the capacity of individuals and communities, usually at the village level, to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency in food production to meet their own needs, through consumption and resale of their produce.

In Laos, more than a quarter of rural villages do not have direct access to drinking water. The impact of this on the health of villagers, especially children and vulnerable people, is well known. We bring access to clean water and sanitation to the most remote communities, while raising awareness of hygiene principles. We do this by

  • Improving food security by training people in more productive farming techniques that respect the environment, sharing resources by establishing village seed banks, and training veterinarians to manage and care for livestock.

  • Improving community health by installing latrines and clean water systems, and providing nutrition training to ensure healthier and more varied diets for children.

  • Raising awareness of environmental management and protection through training in sustainable land management, water management and climate change adaptation.
